Stronger literacy through community.

Through collaborative initiatives, advocacy, and the exchange of resources, Long Island Literacy Coalition is building bridges across districts and neighborhoods. Together, we are strengthening the literacy landscape of Long Island. As parents, educators, admins, and community members—we play a critical role in ensuring that every child has access to effective and evidence-based instruction. Our goal is simple: raise awareness, empower educators and parents, and advocate for ALL students.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Science Behind Proficient Readers

The over 50 years of research outlines principles and practices for research-based instructional design and emphasizes the importance of systematic and explicit phonics instruction, strengthening phonemic awareness, and building comprehension skills so that children can develop into strong and proficient readers.

Research shows that structured literacy approaches yield the highest gains, benefiting up to 95% of students. Reading is not natural, and our brains must be rewired in order to become proficient at reading text.

Connecting research with classrooms.

The Long Island Literacy Coalition highlights evidence-based practices shaping instruction and advocacy. As Dr. Joseph Torgesen reminds us, explicit instruction means leaving nothing to chance. Effective literacy teaching does not assume children will pick up skills on their own — it provides systematic, intentional guidance so every learner can succeed. These focus areas are explored further during our monthly meetings.
